The Boiler Room is as far removed thematically as it is geographically from the Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea gay scenes—what New York lovingly calls a "post-gay gay bar"—where orientation isn't a good enough basis for conversation and being the most over-the-top bottom won't win you any favors. This is a bar for those who consider themselves drinkers first (and mostly beer), men second, and everything else a distant third. That's not to say that there isn't a fair bit of cruising going on at all times—it's just that there are more important things going on, like drinking, and ducking into the seating areas is an easy escape for any group just looking to drink and talk the night away.
